Sun Dog above Johannesburg

November 1, 2010

A sun dog is visible in Johannesburg’s sky this morning.  At my friend Angie’s insistence that I might be able to see it from East London too, I went to look.  Now I’m partially blind – thanks! 😉  My sister, Andrea, would have taken a photo but she says it is too big.  This is what I found online (because if you can’t see it in real life, there’s always the internet):

There’s an amazing ring around the Sun this morning.

It’s a sign of rain to come

We can see it from our office in Jozi – go check if you can see it too…

“It’s like God’s Eye is staring down at us,” Thuli Zungi commented.

What causes this phenomenon?

A ring around the sun or the moon is also called a halo.

A science website called highlightskids.com explains that this is caused by the scattering of sunlight by tiny ice crystals very high in the sky.  These often form in front of warm fronts that bring rain.
