K-Pop Phenomenon 2NE1

November 14, 2010

3 fire shows last night:  1 children’s party at a very fancy house, a 60’s dress up party at Buccs – drumming by Dave Oldfield and Kevin Fish (also playing didgeredoo – goddammit he is very good) and a promo at Man’s club in Mdantsane – firedancing with Janine & AJ.  I asked for a Black Label [beer] at the bar and was very confused when the bar lady said, “Sorry we don’t have Black Label.”  What?!  😕  (If you’re South African you’ll understand my surprise!)  “Um, what do you have?”  “Reds… But they’re not for sale.”  … More confusion. …  “They’re free”, she says.  “Oh … Ok, I’ll have two please.”  Arrived home 12.30pm, smelling of parafin and methylated spirits (Man’s wanted coloured flames) – needing a shower.

My right arm is not working today (enthusiastic hooping practice and much poi spinning) :-P.  Posting with my left hand.  Today you’re getting K-Pop.  What is K-Pop you ask?  J-Pop is Japanese pop.  K-Pop is… Korean pop of course.

Jean had found a music video by 2NE1 and liking the production and of course, the pretty Asian girls ;-), looked up more of their work.  This morning an episode of 2NE1TV (reality) was open in my browser – guess what he was doing while I was fire-showing, haha.  Very cute – of course, the Korean is unintelligible.  These girls work very hard, have topped many charts and won various awards and since worked with will.i.am (Black Eyed Peas).  And (some) of the wardrobe on the videos is fabulous!  I’ve been sucked in too 🙂 and even found some of their very sweet dance tutorials – because i’m loving learning to dance!

(Hangul: 투애니원; RR: tu-aeniwon; pronounced “to anyone”[1] or “twenty-one”[2]) is a South Korean hip hop/pop girl group formed by YG Entertainment in 2009. 2NE1 consists of four members: CL, Bom, Dara, and Minzy. The group’s name 2NE1 stands for “New Evolution of the 21st Century”.[3] First appearing in “Lollipop“, a commercial campaign with Big Bang for LG Telecom, their debut single “Fire” was released on May 6, 2009. Since then, they have released one extended play, 2NE1, and one studio album, To Anyone. Four of their songs, “Fire“, “I Don’t Care“, “Follow Me,” and “Go Away” have all hit number one in Korea.

Fire” was released May 6, with two versions of the music video — a “space” version and a “street” version — released the same day.[14] The videos received over one million views in a day.

Jean’s practising poi right now to this video on loop. 🙂
